Don Edkins
Documentary filmmaker & producer, STEPS
Don Edkins is a South African documentary filmmaker and producer based in Cape Town, co-founder of the non-profit media organization STEPS in 2001.
He has produced documentary film projects that have been broadcast around the world, such as Steps for the Future (2001), Why Democracy? (2007), and Why Poverty? (2012), earning multiple international awards including an Oscar for Taxi to the Dark Side, and the Special Teddy Award at the 63 rd Berlinale for Steps for the Future. The Peabody awarded Why Poverty? project, with documentary films from 21 countries, was screened globally by 70 broadcasters. He is Executive Producer of the documentary film project Generation Africa (2022), with 25 films from 16 countries across the continent on the theme of migration and youth opportunities. The Last Shelter (Mali) premiered at CPH:DOX where it won the DOX:AWARD. No Simple Way Home (South Sudan) and No U-Turn (Nigeria) premiered at the Berlinale 2022. The films have been screened at more than 435 film festivals.
Currently he is developing Generation Africa 2.0, a documentary film project for African filmmakers on climate change and environmental justice, with 30 films in development from 21 countries across the continent. He is Executive Producer of AfriDocs, a free-to-view VOD platform across Africa that screens the best African documentary films, and is co-author of Steps by Steps, a book on documentary filmmaking.
